Growing Cannabis in Oklahoma: Seeds and Clones 101

If you are interested in growing your medical marijuana at home in Oklahoma, you’ll need to start with seeds or clones. In this article, we are going to explain the difference between seeds and clones and how to obtain both. If marijuana isn’t legal in your state, we don’t recommend growing cannabis, purchasing seeds, or possessing clones.

Where Do I Get Cannabis Seeds?

You can acquire cannabis seeds in a few ways. If growing is legal in your state (like in Oklahoma), then you may find dispensaries that sell seeds. You can also order from an online seed bank, many of which are located in the UK, Netherlands, or Canada. Some people simply collect the seeds they find in marijuana bud they purchased from the dispensary. This method can lead to less-than-desirable results, though, because you are not always getting mature and consistent genetics in those seeds. Seeds should be used within 16 months of becoming mature or frozen for future use. You’ll find that cannabis seeds are much more expensive than the garden variety plant. You’ll pay anywhere from $10-$15 per seed, typically in packs of 10-20 seeds.

Can I Legally Buy Cannabis Seeds?

Federally it is against the law to purchase seeds in the US. If your state allows you to grow marijuana for medical use, and if you are buying them from a local dispensary, you’re ok. If you are buying your seeds from a seed bank overseas and the seeds are found coming through customs (or on your person), they will be confiscated. Because of the grey area legally for purchasing and possessing seeds in the US, most novice growers opt into buying clones.

Where Can I Get Clones?

If you know someone who grows, you can ask them to cut a clone from one or several of their plants. Some dispensaries in states where cannabis is legal often sell cannabis clones of popular strains, so if you can buy them from a commercial grower, that would be the best option. Clones are perfect for inexperienced growers who are not confident about germinating seeds.

What Strain Should I Get?

If you are growing marijuana for medical use, you should start with finding a strain that is best suited for your symptoms. Many strains that have been around for a long time have been grown by a lot of people, so the amount of knowledge and experience pertaining to popular strain will help you get started.

Before you obtain seeds or clones, you need to acquire some equipment to grow them into beautiful cannabis plants. In our next article, we will be discussing the basics you’ll need to invest in before starting your journey into cannabis cultivation. And don’t forget, you’ll need to get your Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Recommendation and License first.
