Since June 2018, medical marijuana has been legal in the State of Oklahoma. The industry is booming, and dispensaries are popping up all over the place. But you might be wondering if it’s possible to grow marijuana for medical use, and the answer is yes.
Getting Your Oklahoma Medical Marijuana License
First, you need to obtain a medical marijuana license. To do this, you’ll need a medical marijuana recommendation by an approved physician. Since there are no qualifying conditions in Oklahoma, the physician will follow the same judgment they use to prescribe any other type of medication. A typical recommendation visit usually lasts about 15-20 minutes, but in many cases, you can use a TeleHealth service to get evaluated from the comfort of your couch. Just make sure you have a valid form of State ID ready to prove you are an Oklahoma resident. The cost of evaluation can vary slightly, but most are the cost of a typical doctor’s visit.
Once you pass the recommendation stage, you apply for a Medical Marijuana License by filling out an online form, attaching your doctor’s recommendation, and paying a $100 fee. You should get a response within 30 days, and your card mailed to you. Your card lasts two years and only costs $20 if you have Medicaid or Medicare.
Legal Regulations on Growing in Oklahoma
Once you have your shiny new Medical Marijuana License in hand, you are allowed to possess up to 6 mature cannabis plants and six cannabis seedlings (plus 1 ounce of concentrates, 72 ounces of edibles, and a total of 8 ounces of cannabis) in your home. Seedlings are plants that have yet to develop leaves with the full number of blades on new fan leaves. A mature cannabis plant will have between 5 to 7 blades per leaf (but sometimes more in certain strains).
If you have the resources and time to give cannabis plants the love and care they need, six mature plants can yield plenty of flowers for a single person to use medically. Growing marijuana indoors can be time and energy-intensive, and growing it outdoors leaves your medicine exposed to the elements (and potential thieves). Cannabis plants have a very distinct and pungent aroma, so it will be hard to keep the fact that you are growing a secret. Also, if you are renting or leasing an apartment or home, you will need your landlord’s written permission.
