Whether gained from combat experience or a tragic life event, PTSD can be a debilitating medical condition. Almost 8 million people will suffer from PTSD in a given year (2). Symptoms include anxiety, stress, insomnia, bad dreams, and poor memory consolidation.
Marijuana is being used for the treatment of PTSD at an increasing rate, partly because the condition is thought to be connected to the endocannabinoid system of the brain. A 2013 study found that people in the vicinity of the 9/11 World Trade Cente attacks suffering from PTSD had reduced levels of cannabinoids in their system (1). Medical marijuana can replace these cannabinoids, reducing the symptoms of PTSD in most adults with little to no side effects.
We decided to up a few of our favorite strains that can help with PTSD symptoms:
Headband
This strain is a hybrid of two popular pain-relieving strains, OG Kush and Sour Diesel. It helps patients relax and is perfect for tackling anxiety and stress. It can take a while to kick in, so going slow with this particular strain is key.
Harlequin
High CBD strain that can relieve pain and stress while maintaining energy and productivity throughout the day. It is a Sativa dominant hybrid that can aid in a lot of different health problems, but it is great at reducing stress, pain, and anxiety.
Northern Lights
A popular and classic Indica strain renown for its psychoactive effects. Northern Lights is also known to relieve insomnia, depression, and stress, and relax muscles. It is also been used to make a few very popular hybrids, so if Northern Lights is unavailable, you can try the Super Silver Haze.
Blue Cheese
A great Indica strain that is relaxing but doesn’t make you quite as sleepy as most heavy hitting strains. Very helpful for stress, this strain is also known for having a unique creamy blueberry flavor that will make your daily dose of medicine all the more enjoyable.
Grandaddy Purple
This sweet Indica cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud has a super sweet berry flavor and aroma. Perfect for sleeping (or just relaxing in one place for an extended period of time), you can also work up an appetite and combat depression.
Bonus: Edibles
If you want long term relief and a a more physical relaxation experience, you might try edibles using any of the strains above. Edibles can either be made at home or be purchased from dispensaries in the form of candy, drinks, baked goods…the list goes on.
Suffering from PTSD? Trying these strains might give you some relief from the day-to-day struggles. As always, talk to your doctor before trying any new medication or treatment options.
